If you had toothache, would you consult a plumber, or a dentist? If you consult a plumber, he may say 'I had toothache once and the dentist ripped out half my mouth'. If you consult a dentist, she may say 'brush with sensodyne toothpaste, and the pain will go away in no time'.

If you had chest pains, would you consult your postman or your GP? If you consult your postman, he may say 'my father once had chest pains then collapsed with a heart attack'. If you consult your GP, he may say 'stop eating cheese at midnight, stick to a balenced diet, and your indigestion will subside'.

If you smelt gas but weren't sure, would you ask the elderly lady next door if she could smell anything, or phone the gas company? If you ask the elderly lady next door, she may say 'no', forgetting to tell you that she hasn't smelt anything since 1956. If you phone the gas company, they will be out the same day with gas detectors, and thank you for your concern, even if they don't detect a leak!
