The Highway code is the official road safety manual for Great Britain, and applies to England, Scotland and Wales. First published in 1931, It is updated by the government on a regular basis and covers over 300 numbered rules and regulations as well as details and meanings of road signs, road markings, and other information relating not only to motorists but to pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and the control of animals on the public roads. Also advice on maintenance, licence requirements, documentation and the penalty point system.
 

The most vulnerable road users are pedestrians, particularly children, older or disabled people, cyclists, motorcyclists and horse riders. It is important that all road users are aware of the Code and are considerate towards each other. This applies to pedestrians as much as to drivers and riders.

 Many of the rules contained within the highway code represent road traffic laws and must be obeyed at all times. Other rules are merely advisory however under current legislation failure to obey these rules can still count against you in any proceedings.

The highway code is essential reading to anyone taking the theory test, and everyone who intends to use the public highway!
