Since July 1996, anyone wishing to learn to drive in the UK has had to take a theory test, consisting of a series of multiple choice questions.

Originally a written examination, since November 2000 onwards the test is taken using a touch screen computer based system.

In November 2002, a second 'hazard perception' component was introduced to the test, whereby the candidate watches a series of video clips and must click the mouse button when a developing hazard is spotted.

The multiple choice theory and hazard perception tests are taken together within a single appointment, and the result is given at the end of the test. Both parts must be passed together, to be awarded the certificate which is required to book a practical test. The certificate is valid for two years from the date it is issued.

If you are new to the concept of the theory and hazard perception tests then we can assure you there is nothing to worry about. 555 Drive, Learner Driver Academy will provide you with all the tools you need to make the whole process quick, easy and enjoyable.

Many candidates have actually commented on the simplicity of the test, and indeed, it was never actually designed to be hard or in any way taxing, but as a way of getting new drivers to learn and understand a variety of situations they may encounter on the average journey. When you first take a practice test, you may be surprised at how much you already know about road signs, markings, highway code and simple health and safety issues and may laugh at some of the suggested answers given for you to choose from as part of the multiple choice.

Obviously though, it's important to answer the majority of the questions correctly in order to pass. Some questions require you to select more than one part to give a correct answer, and to pass, you need to get a minimum of 43 correct answers out of 50 questions.

The second part of the test, the 'hazard perception' test, consists of a selection of 14 video clips of which there will be 15 hazards you will be scored on, meaning you will be scored on one hazard on 13 of the clips, and two hazards on one of the clips. Each video clip may contain more than one hazard, however you will only be scored on the hazards that have been pre selected as part of the test so it is important that you remain alert throughout each of the clips as the first hazard you detect may not be the one you are scored on.

Some people can find learning the hazard perception component a little difficult at first, and even some driving instructors and examiners couldn't pass the first time they tried the test, however with a little practice you will find there is a knack to working out when to click the mouse button to give you the best score.

When you start learning to drive with 555 Drive, Learner Driver Academy, you will be given free access to all our online learning resources which include all the training materials you need to pass the theory and hazard perception tests. You will also receive copies of the Highway Code and other manuals useful in both your theory and practical driving tests.
